Origin Bell warden of the Thornmere pass
Haldric kept the Great Bell in the storm pass above Thornmere, warning the valleys of forty princes when winter or the Wyrdwings came. Each toll cost the kennels a quarry, and Rhask the hound learned to hate it; he still flinches at its swing, and Haldric keeps upwind of him. When the court ordered every bell in the West melted for roll chains, Haldric tore out the clapper, lashed the dark-iron bell to his back and walked out. Its tolls now drive the enemy back step by step. On the root road he and Dunthu, another bell bearer, argued all night whether a bell warns or fights. The Bell of Heaven rings his destined Hours, never for the living.
Every toll is a reminder that time belongs to us.

Haldric learned to run through blizzards and mountain squalls whenever winter storms threatened the high passes above Thornmere. Lowering his broad shoulders, he barrels straight toward the distant rear lines, his heavy brown oilskin cloak billowing behind him. No blade or hex deflects his relentless stride while the dark-iron bell thunders on his back, and his brutal collision hurls enemies down to crawl sluggishly from the mud.

When the court ordered the Great Bell melted for roll chains, he refused to let its voice be silenced. Haldric heaves the pear-shaped iron clapper with both hands and strikes the empty mouth of the dark-iron bell strapped across his spine. A deafening shockwave of bronze-tinted sound ripples outward in a wide circle, hurling nearby attackers backward and leaving them dazed on the ringing earth.

Decades of carrying the massive pass bell forged Haldric's stooping frame into an unyielding mountain of endurance. The thick mail coat over his moss-green gambeson absorbs crushing blows, but when heavy impacts strike the chains on his back, the dark-iron rim vibrates with dormant fury. The bell suddenly chimes of its own accord, unleashing a concussive tremor that zaps the attacker with ringing magic and briefly stuns them where they stand.

He tore the heavy clapper from the Great Bell so the court could never melt it into roll chains. Gripping the bright-worn iron rod in two calloused fists, Haldric sweeps the pear-shaped head in a brutal overhead arc. The iron weight smashes into his foe with bone-snapping force, shattering their stance and dulling their fighting spirit under the sheer weight of old iron.

Through countless winter nights in the high pass, Haldric survived freezing gale winds by crouching beneath the hollow bell. When battered near exhaustion, he drops to one knee and swivels the massive dark-iron bell forward to form an impenetrable shelter. Bracing his weathered back against the thorn-embossed rim, he catches incoming missiles and heavy blades upon the resonant metal, taking barely a scratch while dark iron wards harden around him.

He carries the pass bell until the destined Hours of Heaven summon its full, unchained judgment. Haldric plants his boots into the soil and rhythmically hammers the pear-shaped clapper against the Great Bell, sending continuous ripples of bronze thunder churning across the field. Wave after wave of dark-iron resonance drags at enemy limbs and rattles their marrow, culminating in one final catastrophic strike that shatters the ground and stuns all who hear its mournful knell.

Appearance
Haldric is a big, broad, stooping man in his fifties with a weather-reddened face, a thick grey beard, pale blue eyes and long grey hair tied back with a leather thong. He wears the gear of a Thornmere bell warden: a quilted moss-green gambeson under a short mail coat, a heavy brown oilskin cloak and leather harness straps crossing his chest. Lashed to his back with chains and leather is the Great Bell of the storm pass: a dark iron bell taller than his torso, its rim cast with a band of thorn branches and the crests of forty princes, its mouth hanging empty. His weapon is the clapper he tore out of it: an iron rod as long as his leg with a heavy pear-shaped iron head, worn bright where it struck, swung two-handed like a maul. Palette: dark iron, moss green, oilskin brown. Silhouette hook: a hunched man carrying a huge black bell on his back.
