Origin Barrow beast of the Thornmere woods
Yorvan slept under the mossy Thornmere mounds among forgotten princes, half stone and half root. For years Morwen kept his mound off the Barrow Census, taking it for a prince's grave. When the clerks came anyway he woke angry, and the first voice he knew was hers. He walks with the barrow on his back, wrapped in living bark that regrows as fast as it is cut, and where he digs under a line, brambles burst up and hold it. Elderhusk, the Rotwood Ancient, keeps the Wild Growth meant for him and grows his forest only on the dead. Thessaly wants it too and calls Yorvan a mound with opinions; he thinks a forest should be allowed to bury.
The soil remembers every seed, and every trespasser.

He learned to crawl through deep peat when heaven's clerks first probed the Thornmere mounds with surveyor iron. Sinking his hunched bulk into the churned soil, Yorvan tunnels silently beneath the battle line. He bursts upward amid the packed enemy vanguard, thrusting his knotted oak limbs skyward while thick black roots erupt from the grass to drag hostile boots into living earth.

Centuries spent tangled among the foundation boulders of forgotten princes gave him mastery over buried rock. Dropping his massive frame forward, Yorvan drives his root fingers deep into the turf and tears the ground wide open. Jagged slabs of grey standing stone lurch upward in an exploding circle, shattering enemy formations and knocking nearby warriors senseless beneath raining soil.

Morwen shielded his mound from the census while the deep woods blessed his slumber with tireless renewal. Dark brown plates of living bark grow endlessly across his torso, furred with damp moss that constantly knits closed every axe gouge. Hostile incantations unravel upon touching his lichen-crusted chest, sinking harmlessly into ancient timber while sweet sap restores his vitality.

He gathered these parasitic seeds while sleeping beside bramble-choked tombs in the damp Thornmere fens. Flexing his knotted oak arms, Yorvan shakes his earthen shoulders to spray a shower of stinging black burrs over opposing ranks. The shoots immediately burrow into enemy armor, splitting metal seams and anchoring creeping moss-green briars that leave victims stumbling and vulnerable.

The destined office of Wild Growth denied to him still echoes within the ancient heartwood nestled deep inside Yorvan. Whenever crushing strikes crack his outer stone slabs, the hollow sockets of his weathered face and the fissures in his chest ignite with bright amber luminescence. Thick black root cords surge across his broken frame, weaving an impenetrable thicket that dulls incoming blows and feeds his surging regeneration.

He first unleashed this burial fury the morning heaven's surveyors arrived to claim his mound for the census. Dropping onto root-knotted knees, Yorvan slams both oak hands into the turf as the grassy tomb upon his back groans with violent life. The stacked stone doorway erupts, hurling ancient standing stones and dark soil beneath the enemy formation. A colossal bloom of black briars explodes skyward, battering the crowded host and binding them fast within a tangle of moss-grown roots.

Appearance
Yorvan is a towering barrow beast twice a man's height, hunched and slow, half stone and half root: his body is slabs of grey standing stone held together by thick black roots, his arms knotted like oak limbs ending in root fingers. His head is a weathered stone face with a heavy brow, a beard of moss and two deep sockets glowing faint amber. He wears no clothes; living bark grows over him in dark brown plates, regrowing where it is cut, furred with moss. On his back he carries his own barrow: a grassy mound of earth ringed with small standing stones, with a dark doorway of stacked slabs, ferns and brambles sprouting from it. He fights with his root hands and the brambles that burst from the ground where he digs. Palette: stone grey, moss green, bark brown. Silhouette hook: a hunched giant with a grassy burial mound on his back.
