Velune sang in the rosewood pavilions of Valcaris, a voice to calm a hunting hound, and at dawn she sang the hymn at Cassian's vigils; they were to marry when his vigil year ended. The court's bronze oath ended his vigil. Then heaven's Choirmistress came to take the best mortal voices for her eternal choir, and Velune sang for her too, an aria laced with sleeping draught, and was over the wall before she woke. Her songs on a small rosewood harp draw foes in a daze and close friends' wounds under drifting petals. Vasko hanged her teacher for a verse; she knows the sound of his spool. The Choirmistress holds her destined Song, and every voice but one.
