Origin Veil mystic of the Dzhorai peaks
Ilwan walked the ice crevasses of Dzhorai, where the veil to the spirit road grows thin as frost. When Dreadwarden Malakar walled it shut to hold the dying for the Barrow Census, Ilwan carried spirits through its seams on a string of Dzhorai monks' bone beads. Morwen Ashgrave worked the census from its other end; they knew each other by empty graves. His younger sister Saewun opened the wardens' gate for the living; he has never forgiven Ordun for carrying the order that cast her out. He moves half in the veil: a champion he touches leaves the field, whole ranks freeze out of time. His destined office is Thresholds. Malakar holds it with a grave lamp he never wanted.
Step through the veil. Their spears cannot touch what is not here.

Ilwan learned to guide stray souls through glacial crevasses while slipping past the wardens of the Barrow Census. Sliding two carved bone beads along the string at his left wrist, he gestures toward an enemy with pale fingers. A luminous forked wisp of cold pale veil-blue energy surges forward, striking the initial foe and bounding through surrounding enemies in crackling arcs.

He learned to step through the threshold of worlds to evade the patrols that banished his sister Saewun from the mountain gates. Ilwan draws his frost-dusted felt mantle close and steps bodily into the thin veil between planes. Reappearing instantly at his destination, the cold spiritual pressure displaces the air with a pulse of frost, damaging nearby foes and slowing their limbs with spirit-chill.

This banishing technique was honed while denying dead souls to Dreadwarden Malakar's endless census rolls. Gazing past his foe with ascetic grey eyes, Ilwan touches one of the milky blue ice-stone beads upon his wrist and murmurs a funerary rite. The most dangerous enemy is lifted entirely between worlds in a vortex of icy mist, suspended untouchable and helpless beyond reality.

He observed how the incorporeal spirits of Dzhorai pass harmlessly through physical weapons while remaining deeply vulnerable to incantations. Ilwan extends his hand, sending an ethereal ripple from his glowing bone beads to envelop the target. The foe dissolves into a semi-translucent phantom state, rendered incapable of attacking and immune to physical strikes while suffering amplified harm from magical spells.

Living along the frost-sheared boundary where material earth blends into the spirit road expanded Ilwan's mystical perception far beyond mortal limits. As the hundred and eight bone beads around his wrist hum with faint cold blue light, spiritual essence flows freely through his ascetic body. This communion bolsters his resistance against enemy spells, restores his mystical reserves, and extends the reach of his rites.

He claimed this forbidden silence from the deep ice vaults where time itself freezes before the threshold of the dead. Ilwan raises both arms, letting his long bead string trail toward the earth as all three ice-stone beads blaze with blinding pale-blue radiance. A monumental wave of stasis falls over the densest enemy ranks, stopping time itself and trapping all caught within in unbreakable frost.

Appearance
Ilwan is a tall, thin man in his early thirties, a few years older than his sister Saewun, with a long ascetic face, grey eyes that look slightly past whoever he faces, a shaved head and a short dark beard. He wears the dress of a Dzhorai veil mystic: layered robes of faded ochre and slate grey and a heavy hooded felt mantle dusted with frost; the edges of his outline blur faintly, as if part of him already stands elsewhere. His focus is a long string of Dzhorai monks' bone beads: a hundred and eight small yellowed bone beads carved with tiny ward glyphs, threaded with three larger beads of milky blue ice-stone, wound twice around his left wrist with the long end hanging to his knee. The beads glow a faint cold blue when he parts the veil. Palette: ochre, slate grey, pale veil blue. Silhouette hook: a hooded monk trailing a long bead string, his edges blurring.
