Origin Bell-drum warden of the Lanthuy dikes
Dunthu rang the bronze flood bell that set the Lanthuy sluices. When heaven ordered the dikes opened to drown a province behind on tribute, he dragged the bell into the river with him. His daughter Hathu waited three days until the river gave him back cased in its bronze, the striking beam still in his hands, and he cannot take her hand without ringing. Ubaku broke heaven's drought, Dunthu refused its flood, and they swore friendship on the Toad King's bones. He once argued all night with Haldric whether a bell warns or fights. Every blow on him peals loud enough to silence a spell. Floods waits for him; the Dike Opener holds it and never rings a warning first.
When a bell rings on the river, it warns of rising water. My toll warns of rising men.

He learned to bowl down runaway flood wreckage when the Lanthuy dikes collapsed during monsoon season. Tucking his arms inside the verdigris bronze shell of his flood bell, Dunthu curls forward and hurls his bulk across the turf. He rolls like a runaway boulder into the enemy backline, colliding with a concussive chime that knocks casters aside and leaves them slowed.

The river forged this casing around his bones when he chose drowning over drowning his people. The thick bronze shell covering his torso from neck to knees sheds arrows and warhammer blows with dull, resonant clangs. Raised cloud and wave patterns turn aside hostile magic, granting him immense vitality that withstands the heaviest battlefield punishment.

He sounded this defiant rhythm the night heaven's engineers demanded the sluice gates opened. Gripping the dark teak striking beam in both hands, Dunthu swings the iron-banded log against the flank of his own bronze bell. A concussive shockwave of sound explodes outward, flinging approaching enemies backward through the air and stunning them with a deafening roar.

He debated this drone with Haldric through the night, proving a bell can stifle the loudest speech. Dunthu drags the iron rim of his teak striking beam along the verdigris ribs of his carapace in a slow circle. The bell emits a deep, vibrating drone that smothers all battlefield noise, deafening nearby sorcerers and choking their spells before they can speak.

He cannot touch his daughter Hathu without the metal singing of the river's sorrow. Whenever a hostile strike hammers against his bronze bell, the metal carapace rings out in spontaneous retribution. A sharp sonic shock lashes back at the attacker, jolting their muscles with vibrating force that deals damage and leaves their steps sluggish.

This final note he promised to toll over the Dike Opener when he claims the office of Floods. Planting his bronze feet into the mud, Dunthu raises the teak striking beam overhead and hammers the crown of his flood bell. An apocalyptic chime tears across the battlefield, freezing enemy ranks in a concussive stun and smothering all enemy magic in absolute silence.

Appearance
Dunthu is a massive, slow-moving man past sixty whose body the river gave back cased in bronze: from neck to knees he is sealed inside the shell of the flood bell, a bell-shaped carapace of dark bronze green with verdigris, ribbed with raised bands of cast cloud and wave patterns, river weed in its seams. Only his head, forearms and feet show, the colour of old bronze; his face is broad and kind, with a heavy white moustache, river-brown eyes and a shaved scalp, and every touch on him rings. A frayed lotus-red sash is knotted over the bell. His weapon is the striking beam of the bell, a log of dark teak twice an arm long, banded with iron at both ends and hung with a red tassel, gripped in both hands like a ram. Palette: verdigris green, bronze, lotus red. Silhouette hook: a walking temple bell with a head, holding a ram beam.
