Before the court had walls, the Maker Without Lamps took stars from the void to seat the gods and built heaven as an engine that would run itself. Then it sank into silence beneath the throne. When Orevan nailed the wheel, the silence did not stay silence: for nine hundred years it has fed on the stillness, and every star taken for a seat is a star it has eaten. It wakes only when the throne is threatened. It opens fissures of pure null, drinks the magic of intruders and calls up Bound Revenants, the servants it has already digested. It knows neither anger nor pride, only the cold need to keep the engine running.
