Grey-hooded devotees who tend the great smelting furnaces of the Ashen Wastes. They feed the furnaces with whatever tribute arrives, and when a town falls behind on its daylight, what arrives is the town. They mend injured forge workers with poultices of warm soot, and when intruders threaten the works they shield their companions behind curtains of smouldering ash.

The forge breathes only when we feed it. Be fuel or be silent.

Trained in the grim rites of the smelting furnaces, the ash acolyte learns to preserve living fuel for the insatiable cauldrons of the Ashen Wastes. The grey-hooded devotee raises both soot-stained hands and chants a low, rasping invocation over the din of battle. Smoldering ash and warm, dark grey soot swirl from the acolyte's sleeves, coalescing into gentle, ember-lit spirals around the two most grievously wounded allies to knit burnt flesh and mend cracked bones.

Appearance

The ash acolyte is a devoted human temple attendant of the smelting furnaces, standing five and a half feet tall with a slender, stooped frame. The devotee has a soot-stained, leathery face with squinting dark eyes, cracked lips, and blistered hands caked with dry grey ash from years of stoking the cauldrons. The acolyte wears simple hooded vestments of coarse grey wool singed black at the cuffs and hem, bound by a belt of twisted furnace wire holding small soot poultices. Lacking martial weapons, the acolyte casts rites with soot-coated bare hands, swirling dark grey ash and glowing embers from broad sleeves to mend wounded forge laborers. Gentle spirals of warm, ember-lit soot drift around its cuffs. Palette: furnace grey, soot black, coal red. Silhouette hook: a stooped, hooded figure with loose singed sleeves trailing wisps of ash.
