Origin Bog shaman of the Lanthuy wetlands

Ubaku inherited the carved river bones of the Toad King the year heaven's bailiffs held back the rain until the farmers emptied their granaries into tribute boats. He sat in the dry paddies nine nights, croaking with the marsh spirits, until the clouds broke over Lanthuy alone. When heaven sent a flood next, Dunthu refused it, and the two swore friendship on those bones. Hathu keeps the sword the Toad King's suit won; he wants to sue heaven again, she wants to collect, and they argue it at every campfire. He plants the bones as healing totems, drinks rival mages dry and turns soldiers into toads. The Rain should be his office; the Rain Clerk stamps every cloud.

A toad needs neither your blessing nor your permit to enjoy the mud.

He learned to vault muddy irrigation sluices while dodging heaven's canal bailiffs in Lanthuy. Tucking his conical palm-leaf hat close, Ubaku bends his bow legs and springs forward in a wide, clumsy leap. He lands with a wet splash, showering enemies along his path in foul green marsh water that softens their flesh and erodes their magical defenses.

The marsh spirits whispered this humiliation to him during his nine nights of fasting in the cracked paddies. Snatching a carved river bone from his chest bandolier, he points its spiralling rain glyphs at the fiercest enemy. A thick puff of emerald spore mist erupts, shrinking the warrior's proud armor into the squat body of a mottled green toad that croaks in confusion.

He swore the pact of this totem with Dunthu when they defied heaven's artificial flood upon the river dikes. Ubaku pulls a carved river bone from his bandolier and plants it into the turf to conjure a spirit totem. The waist-high bone post sprouts green moss and a crown of broad lotus leaves, revealing a carved toad face whose eyes glow green as it pulses soothing rain mist.

The river toads taught him to drink the magical runoff of heaven's towers before the crops could wither. Widening his broad toadlike mouth, Ubaku exhales a guttural chant that rattles the carved bones across his chest. An iridescent siphon of green light saps the enemy spellcaster's inner stores, dragging the stolen power across the air into Ubaku's thirsty belly.

The Toad King carved protective rain glyphs into the river bones before heaven withheld the monsoon from Lanthuy. The nine grey-white bones strung across his chest hum with a low rattle whenever danger approaches. A tranquil aura of pale green marsh vapor settles over nearby companions, toughening their flesh like seasoned hide and shielding them against hostile spells.

This grand swamp magic broke the drought over Lanthuy when the Toad King answered Ubaku's nine-day prayer. Ubaku lifts both hands toward the sky, rattling all nine carved river bones against his chest. A torrential downpour of murky green rain drenches the battlefield, battering the enemy vanguard with marsh power and instantly transforming a cluster of foes into croaking, mud-caked toads.

Appearance

Ubaku is a short, round-bellied, bow-legged old man with olive-brown skin, a broad toadlike mouth, bulging amber eyes and a bald head spotted with green clay. He wears the bog shaman's dress of the Lanthuy wetlands: a knee-length wrap of faded reed-green cotton, a cape woven of dried rushes and a conical palm-leaf hat hanging on his back. His focus is the carved river bones of the Toad King: nine long grey-white river bones, each carved with spiralling toad and rain glyphs, strung on a cord and worn across his chest like a bandolier. He pulls one free and plants it to grow a Mending Totem, a waist-high bone post that sprouts green moss and a crown of lotus leaves, with a carved toad face whose eyes glow green. Palette: reed green, mud brown, bone white. Silhouette hook: a squat, wide-mouthed figure with a bandolier of long bones and a hat on his back.
