Shiraka grew up behind the paper screens of the Hakurai palaces, where a secret sold to heaven's scribes could buy a family a season of daylight; her sister Runae grew up apart, among the shrine moths. Shiraka learned to take secrets instead of selling them. Paid once to sell heaven the hill where Sister Maeri hid the dying, she killed the scribe sent to buy it; Maeri never knew. She works in smoke: a fan of nightshade thorns, a mark of dusk on whoever gives the orders, then she is behind him. Runae took one memory from her and will not say which. Secrets would be her office; the Whisper Minister keeps it and hears every whisper first.
A secret is safest when the only throat holding it stops breathing.

Shiraka mastered stepping through living shadows when she ambushed and killed the heavenly scribe sent to purchase Sister Maeri's hill. Slipping across the flagstones in soft split-toed boots, she dissolves into ribbons of ink-black dusk and instantly reappears behind the enemy backline. She snaps her folding war fan open with a sharp metallic hiss, sweeping its razor-honed outer rim across exposed necks in a clean, lethal arc of glistening crimson.

Each removable black nightshade thorn set into her fan ribs is coated in concentrated venom that glistens with a sickly violet sheen. Whenever her war fan strikes enemy flesh, this venom seeps into the laceration, igniting a smoldering purple flame that gnaws at the victim's blood from within.

When wounded by enemy blades, she swiftly pulls her black silk half-mask up over her mouth and crushes a pellet against the ground. An opaque cloud of pitch-black smoke tinged with purple billows outward, hiding her silhouette. Drifting through the swirling fumes with sudden speed, she slips harmlessly past enemy weapons and reclaims the tactical advantage.

Separated from her sister Runae among the shrine moths, Shiraka created this technique to suppress pursuers in the narrow palace halls. Pivoting on one heel, she snaps open her forearm-length war fan of dark purple silk and black lacquered steel. With a sharp wrist flick, she releases a circular spray of black nightshade thorns with violet tips that whistle through the air. The barbed needles pin enemy limbs directly to the floor, leaving victims frozen and completely unable to move.

Her posture tightens as her glossy black hair sways, guiding her razor-edged war fan toward unarmored joints and exposed jugular veins. Driven by predatory calculation, her follow-up blows carve through vulnerable arteries to inflict devastating, lethal wounds.

She steps through living shadows to appear behind the most fragile foe, branding their brow with a glowing violet dusk sigil. Landing silently, she unfurls her war fan of dark purple silk like a blooming black flower as the sigil burns furiously. With a crisp snap of steel ribs, the mark implodes into a vortex of purple radiance that executes the condemned target.

Shiraka is a small, lithe woman in her late twenties with a pale heart-shaped face, watchful black eyes lined in red, and glossy black hair cut blunt at the chin with one long lock bound by a purple cord. She wears the night dress of a Hakurai shadow blade: a fitted black silk jacket and split skirt over close trousers, a dark purple sash, soft split-toed boots and a black silk half-mask she pulls up over her mouth. Her weapon is a single folding war fan the length of her forearm, of black lacquered steel ribs and dark purple silk printed with nightshade flowers; its outer rim is honed to a razor, and each rib ends in a removable black nightshade thorn with a violet tip, which she flicks out in a spray.
