Iraen grew up in Hwaryun-of-Lamps, heir to the Ember Throne and its crown of living fire, a flame the Ministry of Tribute was never paid for. She refused the bill. At the hearing that named her fire treason, Seihwa Velvetfang poured the tea and said nothing, and Iraen calls it betrayal. She fled across the red wheat plain, and Garun Redmaw let her through his burning field: a debt she hates owing. She steps through bursts of heat and calls the old sun down in shards. Only Nyssa Frostweave may rest a hand on her burning shoulder and say: not yet, higher. Her destined office is the Sun, and the god in that seat swallowed it.
Daylight is not a luxury to be bought with tribute.

Iraen mastered this basic ember strike during her early royal training beneath the Ember Throne in Hwaryun-of-Lamps. Thrusting an open palm forward from her wide vermilion silk sleeve, she directs the burning flame upon her left shoulder to coalesce into a crackling spear of white-orange fire. The projectile streaks across the air in a trail of grey ash, scorching the target upon impact and setting their flesh smoldering with lingering embers.

Sweeping her slender arms outward, she commands the seven fire tongues of her hovering crown to flare with intense brilliance. An expanding circular ring of orange and white flame erupts violently from the ground beneath the enemy cluster, halting them in stunned agony as searing heat burns through their armor and scorches the soil black.

She leans forward and vanishes instantaneously into a blistering swirl of vermilion light, leaving behind only a faint drift of grey ash. A heartbeat later, she reappears paces away in a thunderous burst of scorching flame and white heat, burning nearby foes as her scorched silk hems settle around her boots.

The blistering gale scorches advancing enemies and fills the air with drifting grey ash, forcing targets to stagger and slowing their forward charge under the blistering heat.

Iraen is a slender, straight-backed woman in her early twenties with a proud narrow face and amber eyes; her long black hair is worn loose, its ends burned to grey ash. She dresses as the fugitive heir of Hwaryun-of-Lamps: a vermilion silk court robe with wide sleeves, its gold sun embroidery scorched and torn at the hem, cinched with a black sash; her left shoulder is bare and burns with a small steady flame that never consumes her. Her focus is the crown of the Ember Throne, a living fire: a ring of seven tongues of orange and white flame hovering just above her brow with no metal band at all, shedding grey ash like snow.
